Frequently Asked Questions

When is the next DRAW it OUT training?

May 21 + 22, 2018 in Philadelphia, PA

visualsforchange.com/drawitout

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will learn to introduce creativity and visuals into your communication. This skill can help you think through problems in a new way, present solutions in non-linear format and engage people in a more meaningful way. It's about learning to use it well. Graphic recording and visuals by themselves are okay - it's when we learn to use them in context in particular ways that they really begin to make a difference. Some of that depends on you bringing your visual intentions. Do you want to use visuals in your board room, your classroom, your meeting room, your design meetings, or on the streets organizing? Bring these intentions with you and you'll get that much more out of the training.

Whether you’re a bonafide artist or can barely draw a stick figure, this training will help you unleash your creative abilities. This is a true learn-by-doing experience – our trainer, Amanda Lyons, will take you through a series of hands-on exercises that will boost your visual skills and confidence. Bring yourselves, we’ll bring the markers, paper, and other goodies. Using big scale drawing, you will learn to capture the essence of a conversation, meeting, class or conference in real-time. You will learn to build your visual thinking skills to communicate in an entirely new and creative way: through drawing!

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO BE A GRAPHIC RECORDER?

That's ok! This training is about so much more! We're going to ask questions like: How can we use visuals to problem solve? to process? for better facilitation & better group work? to get through change together? How do I find my own visual style? This training is a great place to start (or continue) nurturing the visual layer of your journey. This is not your average graphic recording training, although we will learn graphic recording skills along the way.

WHAT IS GRAPHIC RECORDING?

Graphic recording is a skill to visually map out the content and context of anything from a strategic plan to taking minutes at a department meeting. It calls upon our listening skills, filtering skills, information organizing skills as well. It's about much more than drawing itself. Our two-day workshop will allow you to build basic visual thinking skills and find ways to apply them right away as well as provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the graphic recording field. You won't become a graphic recorder overnight, however you'll have the tools to start practicing deeply and get really good at it if you choose to. We'll also focus on context a lot - we think that matters.

Graphic Recording is part of the growing “Visual Thinking” movement, which uses drawing and imagery to convey ideas, capture information, and promote understanding. The skills you’ll learn in this workshop go beyond graphic recording and can be applied to everything from note-taking and meeting facilitation, to giving or preparing presentations, to mediating disputes or acknowledging oppositional ideas, to strategically thinking through ideas and creatively problem solving.

And you will have fun drawing! No previous drawing experience is necessary as we will tap into your existing creative abilities!

WHAT IF I DO NOT CONSIDER MYSELF AN ARTIST?

It's ok! This training is still for you. Visual facilitation calls on many skills and drawing is only one of them. We'll use our skills of listening, filtering, organizing, drawing and more! We'll share tips and tricks about drawing styles - literally giving you a style to start with so you can practice and eventually find your own style. (If you already have a style, bring it! You can always learn by trying on someone else's for a while.) Whether you find yourself drawing regularly or are nervous to pick up a marker, we're excited to learn with you!
